[log in to unmask][log in to unmask], 22 Oct 1996 08:49:00 BST321_- At HPWorld in August, I learned of a little utility available on the web
that would convert Excel spreadsheets into HTML documents. I would imagine
that others would find this of use as well. It turns out that I was given
the wrong URL, if others have been searching for this, the correct location
is: [...]45_22Oct199608:49:[log in to unmask]

     Gregory,

MPE's STORE may be sufficient if you have either a small amount of disk
space or a large window of time to do backups in. Since most installations
do not fall into that category, a more "robust" alternative is necessary.

While RoadRunner and TurboStore will greatly reduce the amount of time
needed to do your backups, <plug on> Orbit+ in conjunction with its TML
(Tape Management Librarian) offers a unique benefit. The TML module
catalogs all of your filenames and their related creation/store data to an
Image/SQL database which can then be used to search against. Now, it's a
simple matter to find the correct tape with the correct version of the file
that your user needs restored in a hurry without searching through mounds
of store listings. At my installation, I have over 500 Reels, 400 DAT
tapes and 150 DLT tapes that are in the TML database. It never takes more
than a couple of minutes to determine which tape has the correct version of
a user's file. Just recently, Orbit has enhanced the TML with a "restore
wizard" that's supposed to even simplify the "correct version" process even
more. I haven't been able to test that option yet.

By the way, I have gone from five DDS-DC drives (with h/w compression on
and Orbit set at COMPRESS=2) that stored all 50.0GB of my data in about
five hours to two DLT4000 drives (with h/w compression on and Orbit set at
COMPRESS=2) that store the same amount of data in about two hours. The TML
database contains file information on over 250,000 files on over 1100
cataloged tapes. The TML database occupies less than 90MB of space.
     <plug off>

Sorry about the long-winded explanation, but I thought you might like to
know about this feature. I've never seen it discussed on this list
      before.

Would anyone care to comment on the sufficiency of STORE vs. third-party
solutions?

I am supposed to recommend to my boss's boss what third-party utilities
(besides the big three: Adager, Robelle, VeSoft) we should have our
out-sourcer buy before we ink the service agreement.
