Glenn Paden, your From: address on your private e-mail to me is unreplyable
(possible DNS trouble?).  So I'm answering your question via HP3000-L from
whence you quoted my original posting.

You do not need HP C/iX to use the gcc freeware compiler.  You do need 5.5
though, because the MPE Developer's Kit RLs come bundled with 5.5 FOS, and
POSIX stuff requires these RLs.
