greetings from chicago!

here are the minutes from sig mpe. please let me know if you have any
questions..... - d
===================
SIG MPE, 17 aug 2004

1. john burke remains as chair of sig mpe
2. introduced hp representatives
3. covered 7 tactical 2004 sib items that hp has commited to doing
   - network printing to non-hp printers
   - support ftpusers and ftpaccess
   - firmware reporting
   - send commands to scsi devices
   - spoolinfo
   - devinfo
   - volinfo
4. 2 tactical issues addressed by script available on jazz
   - system-level ci variables
   - enhanced showjob
5. 'backporting' sib enhancements
   - many customers are willing to patch to add on enhancements but
are stuck on 6.5 due to 9x7 hardware
6. getting beta patches into gr status
   - putting them on jazz creates monitoring/follow-up issues with hp
   - requested weekly 'current beta patch' update to 3000-l
7. disaster recovery after 2006
   - lots of responsibility on users to do 'homework'
   - need 'go to' people within hp to handle mpe issues after 2006
8. stm passwords
   - will be removed before end of 2006
9. merging sig's
   - revisited merging in sig image
   - need for advocacy is even more important as eol approaches
   - sig vplus indicated they'd like to merge in
   - sig cobol is also a likely candidate
10. hp update from mike paivenen
   - storage issues - hba's, large scsi drives, ability to update
                      firmware, driver 'hardening'
   - making ce handbooks available
   - hobbiest source license

Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are.
"Ulysses", A. Tennyson
