I warned of this problem almost a year ago, but it looks like HP did not
listen. The DDS-4 will indeed not read of write to 60M tapes. I believe
that it can read, but not write on a 90M tape. The 120, 125 and 150 are all
ok for read and write.

As to your immediate problem, you can get a copy of SLTCOPY at the Hicomp
website and use that to copy the 60M tape to a 90M or better tape, if you
have a system with 2 or more tape drives. If this is an add-on product, I
do not believe there is any non-file system stuff on it. You should be able
to restore on another system and then store the stuff on a new tape.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: dds-4 and tape from HP

Hi,

A customer has a new A-box with only a DDS-4 tape drive. The tape sent
from HP for an add-on product is DDS-1 format. In the past, DDS was
always back compatible, meaning that if you had a DDS-3, it could read
tapes from a 1 or 2. However, DDS-4 can't read a DDS-1 tape:

PROBLEM
Can a DDS4 read from or write to a DDS1 tape?
RESOLUTION
Because the DDS-4 tape path is designed for thinner tape (90m,
120m,125m, and
150m used in DDS1, 2, 3, and 4), writing or reading from the thicker 60m
DDS-1
media is not supported as overall DDS performance would be compromised.
(Note: 90m tapes are read-only)

So, the tape drive keeps ejecting out the tape. Any ideas for
workarounds (besides installing a DDS3 drive)?
Is there a way to restore this tape on another system and then move the
files over via the network and then cut a tape from the DDS-4? I think
not, because isn't a bunch of stuff on this tape non-store/restore files?

Thanks.

- Chris
