Al,
We have had problems with DLT drives not recognizing a tape mount before. One thing that can happen is that a STORE attempts to open the device, the device is unresponsive, and the OS essentially loses its ability to communicate with that device. The only thing that will bring it back to life at that point is to reboot the system. There was a patch that was supposed to fix that problem, but it still happened to us after installing the patch. HP is working on a new patch, I believe.

In our case, this happened when we stopped and restarted networking (NETCONTROL STOP/START), which also requires restarting the CSTM daemons (STMSHUT.DIAG/STMSTART.DIAG). When the STM daemons start up, they build a map of the system's hardware. That's why the MAP command in CSTM is able to return results immediately - the map is already built. Anyway, if we mounted a tape at the same time that the map function was accessing the drive, it could cause this problem. In your case, I'm sure it happened because of the dead drive, rather than any interaction with STM, but I wanted to describe the scenario in case it could be of interest to someone else.

I'm afraid I don't know the patch ID of the patch that failed to fix the problem, nor the status of its replacement. In any case, the answer to your question is that you will probably have to schedule a restart of your system.

Regards,
John Clogg

Subject: DLT7000 issue

I have a customer with a smart enclosure with 2 DTL7000 on separate F/W SCSI cards. One of the DLT's broke (would not power up). I replaced it with a DLT but the tape never mounted. I then put a second DLT in with the same results. If I move the working DLT to that side it works fine. I can not believe that I have to non working DLTs. Any ideas what I can look at next?
