"It depends."

FastCGI provides a language-independent solution for the CGI
performance/persistence issue.

I used to think FastCGI was dead due to lack of developer activity, but I just
checked at www.fastcgi.com, and it looks like they released a new version of
mod_fastcgi last week. Now that all versions of Apache which run on MPE
support DSOs (WebWise, the Apache 1.3.9 beta from CSY, and Apache 1.3.12 from
bixby.org), why not join the porting club and build mod_fastcgi as a DSO?

But as you mention in your message, there are other language-specific solutions
too for CGI programming.

I like to write my CGIs in Perl, so I would probably use mod_perl instead of
mod_fastcgi.

If I were a Java programmer, I'd take a look at the mod_jserv beta that CSY
released on Friday, and if I was contemplating a large-scale Java project, I'd
take a look at Enhydra.

The Java station at the HPWorld CSY booth will be showing off Enhydra. Stop by
and take a look.
