as long as the ups has enough 'oooomph' to drive what's going to be attached, i guess one ups isn't all that different from another.
since i was asking about ups monitoring awhile back, now seems like a good time to provide an update....
i got a network management card from <plug> apc </plug> and have been testing mpe's ability to talk to it (and the ups as well) via snmp. works like a champ :-) apc's mibs provide the information that i need to know -- in particular percentage of batteries left and amount of time left. when i detect that the ups has switched to battery power, i start watching those two values in particular. either gets too low (my definition of 'too low' btw) and i can gracefully shutdown the system (take down background processes) and even halt the system (via the shutdown command).
i don't know that apc is the only player in town for this (providing ups status via snmp) but if a goal is to be able to shutdown your mpe system(s) before the battery gives out, you may want to evaluate what the ups' vendor provides in that area. - d
ps, if you a copy of the scripts/jobs for the ups monitoring, let me know.

Subject: [HP3000-L] UPS replacement
HP3000/969 with a 3KVM HP PowerTrust UPS (Product# A2998A).
Seems the UPS went south (it's not a battery issue, although the batteries
are nearing their EOL).
Procurement proposed replacing the above UPS with an HP R3000XR and a
couple of 'Extended Runtime Modules'.
Can anyone see any potential issues with the suggested course of action?
Regards
Paul Christidis
