Finally, figured it out. Had lots of help from those champions at Adager.

such fabulous help with my problem.
Whacked the data base and rebuilt it from scratch, re-added the indices and
whammo -- same old problem again!
After a bit of poking around, I discovered that somehow one of the .idx
files wasn't being purged from the HFS directory either by DBUTIL (purge command)
or MPEX (purge command). After many attempts to whack the offending,
remaining .idx file it finally disappeared off the system.
Then I rebuilt the database from scratch, added the indices via DBUTIL and
finally success!
Must have been those Fanta girls for sure.......
