Michael Hensley is right about using tobyte for your existing files.

As I understand it, your ftp is coming from an NT client to the ftp server
on the 3000. In the future, you can issue
binary
quote TYPE L 8
to indicate to the 3000 to expect a bytestream file. Or, you could configure
a SAMBA share on the 3000, and use more NTish means to copy the files, which
will by definition be bytestream.
