O.K.

Then I'm using port 9100 on one of the ports.
Any idea why it works?

On an Intel Box with 3 ports (2 parallel and 1 serial,)
what NPCONFIG parameter would you need to tell it whether
you're sending to LPT1, COM1, or LPT2?

Tom,

The printer MUST support basic pcl - I actually have several of the old 2934
character printers happily connected to JetDirect boxes and spooled using
the network print spooler. Works fine. I've also been able to use non-HP,
but pcl-compatible, laser printers.

As for the network interface card/box, ideally it should be either a
JetDirect or 100%-compatible. However, by using the undocumented option
"snmp_enabled=false" in npconfig.pub.sys, you should be able to use
non-JetDirect cards/boxes. I've successfully used Intel NetExport boxes for
example.

In either case, you will probably need to experiment with other options, in
particular "pjl_enabled", to see what will work.

Fellow HP-3000 Gurus:

I seem to recall reading on this list a few months ago a method by which one
can print from a 3000 to a non-JetDirect printer using the Native Mode
spooler. I searched high and low, but could not find that particular
message. Can someone send that piece of mail to me or point me to a
document which shows the solution?

Thanks much!!
