I'm totally on board. I was born and raised on MPE. The 15 years reference was to 5.5 specifically.

Marti,

MPE is actually 33 years old and is one of the most stable OS's around.

I suppose that they are quite happy using Unix (a 35 year old OS that is

best configured as one-application-per-box) OR Windows (a 22 year old OS

that falls over every time you breath or look at it)?

One cause that we can clearly point to is that 5.5 does not support

passive mode FTP and the new MPLS installed in Italy either does not

support or was not configured to support active mode FTP. Sounds like

an easy enough configuration change. But, other than security

administration, this particular network team is pretty hands off.

Apparently, they outsource the equipment installs to an outside

provider. And they are quite happy pointing the finger at an OS that is

15 (+/-) years old.

As Lars pointed out, this only addresses FTP and not TELNET or VT-MGR.

These issues are most likely firewall related as the new company in

Italy employs a very conservative security scheme.

It's likely that we'll need to upgrade, if only to remove a reason for

the network people to stop trying to fix the network.

BTW, Jack at Abtech was kind enough to test out the FTP update w/o OS

upgrage in his lab. He reports that MPE was not happy. Of course, he

could be throwing the test just to get an Italy trip. ** just kiddin'

Jack **

Cheers

Oddly enough we are also experiencing FTP hangs to our Europe sites on

L*x or Win boxes.

Although unlike our 5.5 friend, we are on 7.5.
