Aside from other network printing issues already discussed here, this
creature, the HP 5000/C40D, is a peculiar animal [at present]. If you
don't already have one, don't buy one unless you get a great deal on a
used one. It is soon to be obsoleted (so I hear) now that HP has their
new "jalapen~o" 5000 640D which does everything the C40 does (AFAIK) at
nearly half the price. But for other C40D victims...

Despite documentation, it works like a LaserJet III-D, but might have
some features of the LJ4 (just limited to 300dpi). The ones sold to
date (unless a recent change) support neither PJL nor Postscript, so no
page level recovery [yet] with MPE/iX 5.5 network printing. New
firmware is on the way for PJL, but they've dropped Postscript (again,
AFAIK). Aside from those caveats, it's a nice little printer. We got
one to replace a 2680 (before the 640D announcement) and it has fit the
bill, albeit quite an "interesting" experience getting there. I doubt
it will have the longevity of the 2680 now that HP has the 640D; they
seem to be "washing their hands" of it. On the other hand, if you want
a 640D, get in line.
