I have to differ here --- because I just did it several weeks ago.

1. configure the dip switches correctly
2. insert the drives (while system is running)
3. go into IOCONFIG and add the path and ldev (it should go out and mount
the drive at this point - look on the console for messages)
4. use volutil to bring the drive into the appropriate volume.

Note: a good idea is to initially create a test volume set for the new
drive(s) and do a little exercising of the drive(s) first before moving them
into production.

Note 2: you should schedule a reboot (start norecovery) as soon as possible
to "fix" the new configuration in place. This is especially important if one
or more drives is added to the system volume set - a "start recovery" could
prove traumatic because the drive(s) would not be recognized, yet files you
might need could be on the drive(s) in whole or in part.
