This is a function of the capability of the SMTP gateway in use. If you're
using the Lotus cc:Mail SMTP gateway, it doesn't understand MIME (unless
they've just started shipping a new version). Don't feel too bad though,
Microsoft's SMTP gateway for MSMail also doesn't understand MIME. In both
cases there are third party solutions that are MUCH more capable, and which
support MIME... a standard which has been around since 1992! Strange how the
so-called "big names" take so long to catch up with current technology
(Microsoft gave up on the MSMail SMTP gateway but to their credit did seem
to do a relatively good job of implementing MIME in the Exchange system).

A word of advice to those of you out there with MSMail or cc:Mail systems
installed who are thinking about connecting to the Internet (or other SMTP
systems)-- don't just blindly buy the packages from the same vendor; MSMail's
SMTP gateway is notably *terrible* - unreliable, crash-prone, and many years
behind current technology. Lotus' cc:Mail SMTP gateway seems to have been
left a bit behind also (though they too have done a better job in their Notes
SMTP gateway). Wordperfect's SMTP gateway is also a bit lacking when it comes
to current technology... Do some research. A simple "Net Search" in Netscape
will likely find you several possibilities.

Even the "proprietary" HP3000 has had MIME capability (via a third party
which I won't name! ;-) ) since about 1993.
