ftp in while loops

Has anyone ever used ftp inside a while loop in a batch job?  We have
tried this with different jobs but only the first iteration of the while
loop works.  When the job gets to the endwhile command ftp's banner is
displayed as if it's still running and tries to process the commands after
the endwhile (:comment and :EOJ).  It makes it back up to the while but
mpe commands are missing and it's confused.
Has anyone done this before?
