That reminds me of the Calvin and Hobbes strip when Calvin's father is
explaining that the reason why television/movies shifted from black and
white to color is that before some year (?) there was no color in the
world.  When Calvin asks "what about paintings done in color" before the
date (whatever it was), Calvin's father says that everyone knows that
artists are insane, thus explaining how they could paint in color before
color existed.
