Is this an MPE password?  Do you want to hide/encrypt it over the LAN from
the DTC to the HP3000?  If this is the case, you are out of luck since the
 data is "clear" over the LAN.
 
On the other hand, there are a few packages out there that will support
user authentication with one time only passwords.  This usually requries
the end user to respond to a message from the HP with an answer that was
provided by a hand held key generator.  The answer (password) would be
different every time, so it would not matter if someone "sniffed" the
password.

p.s. No one other than Jeff has thoughts about Probe vs DNS???  Cmon
guys/gals.  I can't be the only one with this situation.  :)
