Denys,

Valid (and correct) point worth clarifying. The ODBC "lite" (from
MBFoster) that comes bundled with newer version of MPE does require the DBE,
but the standard ODBCLink that is a purchased product from MB Foster does
not. Likewise, the purchased product (ODBC/32) from Minisoft doesn't
require it and there isn't a "free" (or bundled) version of their software.
There is also another ODBC package, I believe from a company in the UK, but
I don't know the specifics of it, as to DBE requirements.

Thanx,
        Jon

Well, you see I thought that the standard ODBCLink from MB Foster did not
allow direct access to a TIDB. I was under the mistaken impression it
seems, that was only available as an extra cost option. I thought there
might be a parallel with ODBC/32 from Minisoft, with which I am unfamiliar.

Denys,

Actually the ODBC/32 software from Minisoft (and the ODBCLink from
MB
Foster) don't require the database to be connected to a DBEnvironment at
all. They both will do native access to the Image database.

Mark,

If your database name is (up to) six characters long. If you do a
"listfile" command against the name of the database (plus an @) you will get
a list of the database files, as in "listfile thisdb@". You will find one
file with just the database name ("thisdb" in my example) and some files
with a two character value attached (i.e., "thisdb01", "thisdb02", etc.)
The one with just the database name is your "ROOT" file and the others are
you data sets. There may be a schematic of the database out there
(frequently named "name"+SC, as in "thisdbsc"), but you can't really trust
that it is current, unless you know for sure about it's creation. You will
need a database management tool like Adager (from www.adager.com) or
DBGeneral (from www.bradmark.com) to decompile the "root" file into a
current schematic file.

Thanx,
        Jon

A quick way to find out this information would be to run DBUTIL.PUB.SYS and
do a SHOW DBNAME ALL for the TurboIMAGE database in question. As the last
item, it will show you the DBE to which the TIDB is connected, if it is
indeed connected. If it is not, you will have to connect it using
IMAGESQL.PUB.SYS. If you need more help, post to the list or send to me
directly.

BTW, You will need to be in the group and account of the TIDB in order to
run DBUTIL.

Subject: Get Database Information From HP3000

I have recently inherited the task of trying to connect to the
database on our old HP3000. I have found a terminal emulator program
and a ODBC driver for this system from Minisoft.com. The problem I am
having is I have no idea what the DBEnvironment name, Schema Name,
etc. is on this system. There is no documentation with the system.
Is there anyway for me to find this information so that I can get the
ODBC connection to work?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Mark
