The command (in most cases) is VSCLOSE. That should put the volume set in a LONER state. If the volume is in a state other than MASTER or LONER (revealed with DSTAT) please post the state and we can go from there.

You need to do a DISMOUNT <volname> in MPE/iX first.

I've been scratching a bunch of old disks on a

Members scratch easily because they come up as
Loners but that pesky Master is always
"in invalid state for desired operation."
