No, if we are going to change lets try and include everything.

Damn now those manufacturers want to create 24 byte model numbers, why?
Anyway, I think the model number is important I want to see the whole thing.
Maybe you can come up with shorter codes for the STATUS field like "MAS" for
MASTER and "MEM" for MEMBER and "SCR" for SCRATCH and "MMD" for MEMBER-MD
and so on. All the other fields you want to see the full text but, the
status could be abbreviated and everyone  would still know exactly what you
mean. This would free up enough bytes for those disc manufacturers to almost
make a run on sentence a model number...:-)
