We use Spoolman for managing spool files but try not to let him manage too many
devices. As a matter of fact, for the most part he only works on files sent to
LP and then we use the method of routing via filename (e.g. FILE x=techprt
sends
output to the Technical Support printer on the development HP/3000).

As for specifying fake DTCs and SICs. I strongly recommend against it. It has
been our experience that if you have any problems with DTCs, the first thing HP
will do is tell you that defining fake DTCs and SICs is causing your problems.
Reguardless of how long you have been doing it.

Also, I am not familiar with the 450 ldev limit on device classes. The last
time we tried to use device classes the limit was 255 and we hit it on all of
our interactive systems except for a beta test sytsem. To give you an idea of
the environment, the biggest (by number of ldevs) system we have is a 995/200
that is connect to 42 DTCs. These DTCs are configured for about 1500 ldevs, of
which 500+ of them are printers. I am not sure how many spoolfiles this system
goes through in a day, but I do know that it turns over job numbers in less
than
36 hours.
