Jeff,
I am currently working with a serial interface reader for a PC project, I
have seen the type you mention as well as other alternate input devices -
keypads etc. that interface via a "keyboard wedge" . Check out
www.magtek.com/swipekbd.html they sell these type of devices. Usually
works out nice as one less serial port is needed. My PC needs 3 serial
ports, one for I/O to host, one for card reader and one for a touch
screen.
