This is correct, they do have to be the same size.  Whether or not they
have to ID out as absolutely identical varies a little bit by what type of
mirroring you're doing and whose hardware/software you are using, but I've
never seen a mirroring solution that didn't require the disc drives to be
the same size, and for obvious reasons.
