I was in a meeting with an ID-card system vendor this morning which
involved, among other things, identification and "debit-card" use of
student/staff ID cards, acceptance of credit cards at various places,
and other things. At some point this obviously crossed the line between
our terminal-based systems doing fee payment/parking/etc and the
previously independent credit-card payment system. Our records need to
keep the credit card numbers in the event of refunds; so I asked about
some sort of reader which could supply data in-line (not unlike a
previous question here about barcode readers to insert data as if from
the keyboard/terminal).

The sales guy said he "thought" they had a replacement PC keyboard with
a mag-stripe reader built into it which inserted the data as if it were
typed when the card was swiped. Sounded interesting. Anyone dealt with
these before? Vendors? Approximate price?
