For those who remember, a few weeks ago I posted a note about a friend who
had placed a PC tech support call and had been connected to poor English
speakers in India with weak PC skills.

The update:
a) This was Dell tech support for an extended warranty Dell PC
b) This was a Windows ME problem with a messed up modem driver
c) Dell HW support came out and replaced the modem - still didn't work.
d) PC owner was advised to use AOL to download a driver (note: non-working
modem on home PC)
e) PC owner was further advised to format C: and re-install Windows
f) Some distant MPE consultant encouraged PC owner to NOT format C: and force
Dell to deal with their extended warranty problem correctly
g) PC and modem are now working fine without formatting C: or wiping out
user's SW or data - just a driver re-install problem.
h) Dell has tech support in Idaho - check time zones before calling. Idaho
staff was finally able to resolve this issue correctly.
i) total no-Internet downtime for PC user friend: approx 3 weeks.

Kinda glad that I have multiple PCs and I'm NOT paying for any support.

Wayne
