fyi ... Patrick's scenario is just what I attempted this week with three
reactive patches for our 996. The patches reside on two separate tapes,
and the install manual doesn't state (that I could find) that Patch/iX will
prompt for additional tapes after the first. To my delight, it did, and
the whole process worked smoothly. At the point of qualifying the patches,
I vetoed all but the three I required, requalified them, and Patch/iX cut
the CSLT. This was two days in advance of the actual update, and it cut
our downtime by at least two hours. Total time: 2.5 hours to back up the
system volume set, apply the patches, restore a few non-system files and
clean up. Normally, I'd have to schedule several hours for an AUTOPAT
update plus backups.

Now, I need to do a PP4 plus reactive patches for another machine, so I'll
see how Patch/iX performs for that update.

If you're gun shy, you can still use AUTOPAT, it worked just fine for us
going to PP4. 'Course, you don't get the nice features of Patch/iX, but
for us the security of working with a known process on a system upgrade
(5.0 to 5.5 PP4) tilted the balance in favor of AUTOPAT. I'll try
Patch/iX sometime when I'm just doing a couple of patches, when it's
perhaps not as critical a situation as an OS upgrade and I can afford to
take the time to learn the new process.
