Hi Kent,
When you run the task in session it is using your current logon, in batch it
uses whatever you specified  as the SQL Server agent logon.  I believe the
default is for SQL Server Agent to logon as the "system account", a user
that has few privileges and can't typically access the network.  I generally
create a special account for SQL Server agent.

I can execute a Data Transformation package in session(HP talk).  When I
