For me today marks both a joyous and a sad event. It is my middle
daughter's sixth birthday and it is also the first anniversary of 9-11.

Unfortunately today I find myself far away from home. As I packed for my
trip this past weekend, I took the time to include the DVD pack of the HBO
series, "From the Earth to The Moon." (visit www.hbo.com) For those of you
who are not familiar with this series, I found the following site
http://www.flyingdreams.org/tv/gallery/earth.htm, which talks about the
series in detail. I have to agree with the site's author about the
opening/closing theme of the series episodes. It is indeed magnificent,
majestic and I would add "haunting."

At any rate, I wanted to relive a simpler time (for me) in history, when we
were trying to achieve something both incredible and dangerous. For the
last several nights I have been watching the episodes in turn and last
night, I watched episode 9 and 10. Episode 9, entitled "For Miles and
Miles", recounts Alan Sheppard's (America's first astronaut), experiences
leading up to and including Apollo 14 and the third Lunar landing. The
episode also depicts what I would indeed call "mission-critical computing."
When you see the episode, you will understand.

Episode 10, "Galileo Was Right", recounts the extra scientific training
received by the astronauts of Apollo 15, courtesy of some unusual teachers
using unorthodox teaching techniques.

Tonight, I plan to watch the final two episodes culminating with Apollo 17,
the last manned flight to the Moon. I can't believe how sad it makes me
that we have not returned in 30 years. I look forward to getting another
HBO series on DVD, Band of Brothers, when it finally comes out.

On the trip over from Houston, I finished the book "Among the heroes,"
recounting the lives of the crew and passengers of United Flight 93, which
crashed near Shanksville, PA. You will remember that I visited the site
during Christmas last year and posted a few pictures I took of the site. I
had a hard time reading the book but I heartily recommend it. It has
recently been revealed the target of flight 93 was the US Capitol. One can
only imagine the magnitude of the attack that was averted by the brave
passengers and crew of United 93.

As an American, I sincerely appreciate Christian's thoughts.

As a civilized human being, I still have difficulty in comprehending the
attacks on civilization itself.

However, I will never "just forget it, put it behind me and move on."

Hello all,

I would like to share all the recurring feelings of loss, grief, pain,
perhaps even rage, that have been expressed exactly 1 year ago this day,
after the Pentagon and WTC attacks. The dust may have settled, but the
feelings are still there, as vivid as ever.

And remember, if this was an American problem, then we all are Americans.
