There are several things which seem to be annoying... and many of us are
guilty of at least one:

1. Using Lookout...er...Outlook with HTML or RTF instead of plain text. I
can see where encouraging Plain Text is preferable over using the new
things. One thing to keep in mind, however - more and more mailers have the
capability to handle RTF and HTML, including AOL's mailer, and even the free
Pegasus Mail - can handle HTML and RTF. More and more of this will be seen
as new folks subscribe. All of these mailers though, have Plain Text
capabilities, and if using Lookout - one can set a default, or even set
"HP3000-L" in their address book, and label it to use Plain Text only, if
their default is something else.

2. My recent peeve was placing read and delivery acknowledgements on posts
to the list. This is a no-no, IMHO, but not much can be done unless folks
are educated. If people read their introductory message after subscribing,
they can find that using the REPRO command, they can get copies of their own
messages in lieu of a delivery acknowledgement. As for read
acknowledgements - why would anyone want to know if hundreds of people read
their message?

I'd love to know just what people are using for (1), their local mail
application (such as Outlook2000, Outlook 97, Pegasus, Eudora Lite, Eudora
Pro, Elm, etc), and (2), what SMTP/POP server they are running. With this
information, we can make informed decisions as to how to educate long-time,
as well as new users to the list. Maybe a pointer to a web page which shows
how to configure your mailer for HP3000-L could be put together from that.
What I'll do is this -- if you privately mail your answers to the two
questions above to me, with "Mail Settings" (without quotes) in the subject
line, We'll set up an Exchange folder to collect them, tally them, and make
the results available let's say, on Friday morning. USE ONLY THAT SUBJECT
HEADING AS RULES WILL BE IN PLACE TO AUTOMATICALLY MOVE THE MESSAGE -
Thanks!

Cheers,
Joe
