As far as I know, this is true. We have a 932, and when we had a cpu board
die, when the ce came out with the new cpu board, it booted as an 832. He
had to boot to the support tape and configure it as a 932.

We wanted to turn our 920 into an 820, but were told we would have to talk
to our sales rep first. We never did (make the 920 an 820), we bought an
E35 (which the machine itself says is an 816!) instead.

I'm sure you could do it as long as the proper arrangements were made.
