Here are few random notes for those running the SETI@home client.
1. Make sure you're running a recent version of the client software!
While the version 1.x clients may still *process* work units, they
will not be able to *return* the results after a certain date! For
many clients, this date has passed. (The HP-UX 10.20 date was the most
recent, failing to return results for the 1.x client as of 3/26.)
For graphical clients (Windows or Macintosh), ensure you're running
version 2.x. If you're not, you can download an updated version by
starting at
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html
(Oddly, the Windows and Macintosh links both reference version 2.03,
but the FTP sites
ftp://setidata.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/
ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/
include 2.04, and the update page at
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/known_bugs.html
documents the changes to the 2.04 clients.)
2. For those running a PC-based command-line client, adding parm "-nice 1"
reportedly "places SETI in the DOS background, i.e., you may close the
DOS window without shutting down the SETI client."
3. Stan now shows the fastest average work unit time, currently a hair under
6 hours 55 minutes. (I guess he got tired of seeing my 7:48. ;)
"Sharkman" retains the lead in total contributions, donating over 8 *years*
of CPU time to the project.
Of course, we're always happy to have more participants in Team HP3000-L!
If you've been running the client awhile, you'll retain your personal stats.
And if you've been running as a member of another team, they'll retain your
contributions.
