Neil, well stated. Microsoft does handle the patching process very well.
Download the patch, or service pack, or service release, run the
(sometimes huge) program, and reboot the box if it is required. Simple,
easy and it works fine, lasts a long time (r).

Last week we had to apply a few patches to MPE 5.5 PP4. After a few false
starts, we finally got an SLT which we used to update the system. The
method is much more complex than Microsoft. When I applied SP3 to NT 4.0,
I put the CD in, opened it with Explorer (I have autorun disabled) and
double-clicked on spsetup.bat. The program started, asked a few questions
(to which the default answers were perfectly adequate), and away it went.
Ten minutes later, I rebooted the box and SP3 was installed.

I suspect Microsoft was forced to develop an easy way to apply patches
because they have so many, but it doesn't mean that other people can't
learn from that.

Microsoft's web site carries proper documentation and instructions about
which patch level is needed and where to get it and how to apply it.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Not even Microsoft upgrades come close to this level of confusion.

We need clear, concise upgrade and patch methods.
Life is already too short and too complex to deal with this madness.

How about,

Place the DAT/TAPE/CD-ROM in the drive,
Place the drive on line, and
Follow the simple instructions presented on the console.
