THANKS, Everybody, for all of your suggestions.
I tried the loose cables bit (didn't know what the terminators looked like),
no luck. I booted from tape to try the START NORECOVERY SINGLE-USER
SINGLE-DISK to test the card, but ISL choked on that (and the alternate boot
path is on the same SCSI card, so we know that works anyway).
Anyway, we're back up now, and thanks to the good attitude and experience of
Ernie Alnas, our CE from Abtech, we lost no data - Ernie had the good sense
to try the old drive (a C3010) with the replacement drive's circuit board,
and sure enough, it worked, saving us from a 2 hour reload and endless flak
from irked users who lost transactions.
