Donna:

Newer 3000s with SCSI discs like the 9x7, 9x8, 9x9 and CBS work okay as
Novell servers as long as you beef up memory (like another 32Mb) and
disc. However, in spite of what some at HP will tell you, some
functions such as directory enumerations do take longer than on a
properly configured PC server. Plus, older 3000s are just pigs when
running Novell. We put Novell on a 935 for kicks and I find that the
response is just ridiculous. Our experience with Novell on 9x8s,
though, shows adequate response time.

My advice: If the Novell is going to be critical for your business and
if programs (as opposed to just data) will reside and launch from the
Novell server, invest in a nice HP Netserver and simply connect the 3K
to the network infrastructure. You'll be happier with the response time.
However, if the Novell portion is really just an aside to the larger
issue of installing a network to allow VT sessions on the 3000, then
consider using your 3000 as the Novell server.

You can order a trial copy of Netware/iX (J2253B for MPE 5.0) and test
my theories for yourself!
