Patrick,

Don't know about a 995 but I had occasion :-( to bring up our 987
from a device other than 7. If I recall from 2 yrs ago:

When asked whether to boot from primary path reply N.
When asked whether to boot from alternate path reply N.
It will then come back and ask for the boot path.

It does not want an LDEV it wants the path to the device so before
you try it you might want to go visit IO config in SYSGEN. That
incident is why all of our tape drives have tacky labels which say
path = nn.n.n.

BTW we are on 5.0(?) OS. Another BTW does anyone know the
status of the 6.0 MPE/iX release?

Subject: Using DLT's as Dump/Boot Devices

Is it possible to use DLT drives as dump/boot devices? I have heard
conflicting things. I called HPRC and they said on my 995 I can do it
under 5.0 (since I have the needed patches) but I'm reluctant to try it.
Somewhere in my brain I have a faint memory that your boot device *must*
be ldev 7, but HPRC said no. A friend of mine says it *has* to be.

We typically use 5 2400' 9-track reels during a memory dump (with HW
compression ON -- *lots* of memory), don't have a DDS drive on this
system, and would like to be able to use DLT.

Is anyone out there actually doing this? If so, what do you need, what
caveats are there, what performance gains do you see over 9-track tape,
etc.?

TIA
Patrick, who is learning *tons* from you folks! (Even lurking!)
