I remember SORT3.

Used it in my first IT job back in 1980 in a shop that had moved from an IBM System/3 to an HP3000/III. Have used it, and XSORT, in several shops since then. Last time was just last year.

When XSORT came out it was very easy to upgrade from SORT3. Just copy 'XSORT.PUB.SYS' to 'SORT3.group.account'. You did not have to change any file equations as XSORT recognised the ones used by SORT3.
