I recently attended a performance and tuning class for HP/UX and
the instructor open by saying "Unix is a scam". She qualified by
stating that "Unix was never intended to be used for what it is
currently being touted". I assume she meant commercial applications,
     but she didn't elaborate.

I don't think it's that this group "hates" UNIX per se, rather that we
recognize it for what it is and isn't. One of the things it isn't is nearly
as robust and reliable as MPE-iX. An most of us here are held accountable
(in one way or another) for the reliability of our "mission-critical" (did I
say that?) business systems. We also recognize the dramatic increase in
system admin work (our work) involved in using UNIX over that required with
MPE.

We are also very tired of having UNIX thrust down our throats all the time
and being told how it is THE open opsys of the future.
(Whew, glad to get that off my chest)>
