The three printers Denis mentions, plus the LaserJet 2000, are the only
LaserJet printers that respond to the status request. LaserJet IID
printers can be made to respond by using a special HP interface card;
other printers require third-party add-ons in order to respond.

The only downside to using TT18 (or TTPCL18) is that the computer can't
detect communication problems or the fact that the printer is powered
off. As long as the printer is powered on and the communication link is
intact, there will be no data loss.
