This is one of those "it depends..." types of questions where more
data is really needed to better understand. Some questions
might be:

1) Are the batch jobs working on the same database or separate
    bases?

2) What tools are being used (QUIZ, Speedware, 3GL-based applications)?
If using QUIZ, is processing using the 'SELECT' or 'CHOOSE' verb?
(I remember one case where a QUIZ report was using SELECT when a key
could be utilized with CHOOSE and the report processing time went
from over 5 hours down to a matter of minutes...)

3) Have there been any application changes? If there have, perhaps the
changes have introduced some inefficiencies which are impacting the
wall-time. Perhaps serial-processing is taking place when adding
a key field would improve performance.

4) Can data be archived and removed from the 'active' database, thereby
reducing the amount of data that may be bypassed when executing
the nightly processing. (Simply reducing the volume of data that is
    no longer needed.)

5) Do you have/have you used any tools to defragment and improve the
condition of your disc drives and file extent placement/sizes?

6) Have you examined the condition of the databases using diagnostic
tools such as <plug> DBGeneral <end-plug>, HowMessy or perhaps
Flexibase? These tools may identify things that can be done to your
databases to help improve performance (reorganizing details, changing
    master capacities, etc.).

7) Has this situation been getting progressively worse without adding
to your overnight processing, or have you simply been trying to squeeze
more work into your night time schedule?

There are many others on this list who may also have some suggestions as
to things to consider. But without more data, we'd all be guessing as to
what might help....
