Lest we forget to pay tribute to a national hero, at least a north of the
Mason-Dixon line hero, let say happy birthday Mr. Lincoln. Like much else in
these days of big box, chain store, all made of ticky-tacky commercialism we
have homogenized Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Washington into one PRESIDENTS. I
suggest that if you get a chance you read some of Lincoln's prose,
especially the non-political work. He had a way of expressing very deep
thought without resorting to classic methods. It is interesting to see that
one can be "down home" and folksy without sounding like a trailer-park
buffoon.
