Well, if we are going to throw gratuitous plugs around,
 
HIBACK already supports backups over networks for HP3000, HP9000 and a bunch
of other platforms, inclusing NT, OS2, Windows and DOS.
 
While I agree with Harvey that taking full backups over a network exposes the
transfer to the vagaries of the network, in many environments this is most
effective for various systems that may not even have backup devices or where
you want to consolidate the backups or make a special device, such as an
Autochanger MO, available to a lot of systems.
