Hi all,
Back in late October, I bought some PC upgrades and used various bits and
pieces to make two PCs. One of these is running NT Workstation and the
other (older) machine is running Linux. Both are actively used for
development, and the Linux box does network routing duty as well. I've been
having a contest to see which one would stay up the longest.

Last Friday, after 51 days of continuous operation, the NT machine froze
completely and had to be reset. The Linux box was still going strong.
Today, though, I hung up my jacket on the chair in front of the Linux CPU
and accidentally hit the reset button. So Linux stayed up for 58 days (and
could most likely have stayed up longer).

The news in this post is that there are apparently now _two_ operating
systems for Intel platforms that exhibit something like commercial-grade
reliability, which is two more than there were a year ago. 50 or 60 days
between reboots is fairly decent.

Of course, our Micro 3000 has been up continuously since June, and the 925
since September, and both shutdowns had been planned. The last unplanned
shutdown for either HP machine was 28 months ago, for a system abort on the
925 caused by network software.

Intel OSs apparently have a way to go yet.
