Steven,
You can not boot from the VA7100 through the SA40.
Sorry, I have even tried to work with Crossroads on this, to no avail. They did not seem interested in fixing the problem.
I sent plenty of SCSI traces.... I don't think it was a priority for them.
In the configurations I have done, I use a Mod20 for the system volume set.

We are configuring an SA40 SCSI to fiber switch to allow our 989 to
connect to a VA7100 disk array. Everything seems to be working fine
execept for that fact that we cannot boot from the VA7100. We get a
message "Error returned from boot device driver. STATUS returned from
driver = -4". The INSTALL command worked fine, but we did note a
message "WARNING. Disk not MPE/iX disk." at the start of the INSTALL.
When we run ODE MAPPER the drives are there.
Does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong?
Thanks,
Steven Waters
