The threaded archive is set up so that it's not visited by email-sucking
spiders (or even legitimate ones). The reason I do that is to help keep
everyone's email addresses from being harvested. Of course with the
newsfeed, my effort is pretty useless since the addresses just get
harvested from usenet.

The other major list that I archive is set up the same way, and many
long-time members of that list say they get little or no spam. So my
trick seems to be working, at the cost of not having the archive indexed
by search engines.

Someone recently sent me some Apache config file entries that check the
user-agent and feed garbage to known email-sucking spiders. The person
who sent them to me claims that he gets several dozen hits a day from
these. But I would think that many email harvesters use forged user-agent
fields to get around this. Does anyone know?
