For one of my wife's Christmas gifts this year, I'll be donating money
to the Nature Conservancy. They have given money to the Association
of Manambolo Natives (FITEMA) in Madagascar recently. On the whole,
most enviromental groups are more politically active than ecologically
active. The Conservancy, while it does some political work, also
takes on the problem in an economic way - by making ecologically
strategic areas in to private property. Since the Conservancy buys
the land, they don't have to beg someone else to take care of it.
It's the libertarian method to conservation. ;-) More info at
nature.org.
