In the Support Roundtable I moderated at Interex one of the questions
ask of the HP pannel was if there was a class problem with the 2GB
SCSI drive. HP's response was "No".

The audience was polled to determine how many people had purchased
2GB drives. This group was polled again to determine how many of them
had experienced problems or failures ===> the results was above 60%.
(Approximately 45 - 60 people acknowledged purchasing the 2GB drives)

No attempt was made to specifically identify the model of the 2GB drive
experiencing the problem.

I'm not sure about the 7978A but the 7980 can be converted to SCSI.
This drive with hardware compression is available at very reasonable
cost on the used market.
