Brian,

You can get Seagate drives off the shelf and use them in
the 3000. The biggest caveat I know of is that the firmware
used in these drives "may not" be on the same par as that
used in the drives sold by HP for the 3000 (even though the
actual mechanism is the same). You would definitely want
to have the drive powered through a UPS, but other than
that, I know of no reason it can't be done. HP isn't going
to support that configuration though, so that may be a reason
to stick with HP's version. I'll probably be adding a 4GB
Seagate to my system later this summer (ST15150N is
the model number as it appears in the IODFAULT.PUB.SYS file),
and at this point, I'm probably going to just get it mail order
from one of my normal PC sources. That is unless someone
can tell me why that is a bad idea :)

However, I am curious about your comment concerning disc drives. Have
you bought/installed non-HP 2GB or 4GB SE/FW drives in you 3k?

Several people in the HP3000 Series 908 discussions
have mentioned that memory is now cheap. I'll agree
that for PC's it is, but I'm close to needing some additional
memory in my 928LX, and it's still quite expensive, even
from third parties. My question therefore is:

Is there an "off the shelf" memory module I can purchase
for my HP3000 S928LX inexpensively? I know I can do this
with the several disc drives, but I didn't think this was the
case for RAM.
