That switch on the Series 48 was commonly referred to as the "knee switch" because operators sitting at the console on the desktop of the Series 48 would turn in their chairs and hit the switch with their knee and power off the system. Most of the Series 48s that I worked on had a piece of cardboard covering that switch to prevent that from happening...a second time.

Back in the days when my series 48 served triple duty (home computer, source of
income and home heater) while I was at a client's office that was connected to
my 3K we suddenly experienced no response from the computer. Forty five minutes
later after driving home I found one of my cats had 'found out' how to turn off
the power switch under the desk top - it quickly got covered with card board
and tape - never happened again. I'll bet the HP engineers never thought they'd
need to 'cat proof' the power switch....
