The College of Health, Education, and Professional Studies has received
funding of $200,074 for the second year of the Osborne Fellows Program--an
innovative partnership between private and public stakeholders to enhance
urban education in Hamilton County by enhancing the preparation of talented,
committed educators. This award from the Public Education Foundation
enables the College to continue recruiting and supporting local educators
who enroll in the Urban Master's Program.

The Urban Master's Program is an innovative degree program designed to meet
the challenges of teachers in Hamilton County's high-priority elementary and
middle schools. By preparing teachers for the unique challenges associated
with teaching in urban schools, the program empowers teachers to assess
student needs, design classroom strategies to enhance student learning, and
ensure that each student is reading at grade level.

The team of UTC faculty who developed the Urban Master's Program
collaborated with Johns Hopkins University to develop a master's program
that combined UTC's knowledge of local needs and resources with Johns
Hopkins' nationally recognized work in applied educational research. The
Urban Master's degree is a 36 credit hour, 2-year program which, through
grant support from the Osborne Fellows Program, is currently offered free of
charge to a select cohort of up to 20 urban educators. This year the
program will benefit from the leadership of Dr. Larry Garrison, a recent
addition to the UTC staff.

Congratulations to Dr. Garrison and the College of Health, Education, and
Professional Studies! The Urban Master's Program provides essential
training to teachers and educators and will have a lasting effect on urban
education.
