Dr. Tatiana Allen, UC Foundation Associate Professor in Physics,
Geology, and Astronomy, has recently received a grant of $9,050 from the
National Research Council.

The goal of the grant is to initiate collaboration between Dr. Allen and
Dr. George Zhuvikin of St. Petersburg State University, Russia to obtain
an in-depth understanding of amorphous and multiphase
amorphous-microcrystalline nanostructured semiconductors. Such research
has applications in solar power cells.

This summer, Dr. Allen will spend six weeks in St. Petersburg to
ascertain and begin the research. In early 2005, Dr. Zhuvikin will
travel to UTC to compile the results of their experiments and arrange
future research opportunities.

Dr. Allen's award is the first of its kind to be received by UTC. The
grant should open avenues to other major funders including the National
Academy of Science and the National Science Foundation.

Congratulations to Dr. Allen! Your research will not only bring new
insight into the field, but also bring prestige to our university's
research community.
